    1st day: Airport Transfer

Upon your arrival at Casablanca airport, our driver will greet you and transfer you to the city, passing through the scenic Moroccan countryside in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. Welcome to Morocco!

After checking in and settling into your hotel, you may wish to visit the Hassan II Mosque, inaugurated in 1993. Built in celebration of King Hassan II’s 60th birthday, it is the second-largest religious building in Africa and features the world’s second-highest minaret. On Fridays and religious holidays, visits are restricted to specific times. Due to its popularity, there may be queues at the ticket office. The tour of this magnificent mosque lasts around an hour, with tickets priced at approximately 120 dirhams (subject to change).

In the evening, enjoy dinner at one of Casablanca’s kosher restaurants. You’ll spend the night in a hotel or riad.

    2nd day: Casablanca – Rabat

Casablanca is home to over 20 synagogues and a vibrant Jewish heritage. This tour includes visits to key sites, such as the renowned Temple Beth-El, the Jewish Mellah, the Jewish Cemetery, and the Museum of Moroccan Judaism.

The tour begins at Temple Beth-El, Casablanca’s most famous synagogue, known for its stunning stained glass windows, biblical inscriptions, and grand chandeliers. It serves as a central gathering place for over 5,000 Jews.

Next, the Mellah, Casablanca’s Jewish quarter, reveals its character, where kosher butchers still operate. The nearby Jewish Cemetery features well-preserved markers and the tomb of the Jewish saint, Eliahou.

After lunch, a visit to the Museum of Moroccan Judaism in the Oasis neighbourhood of Casablanca is included. Established in 1997, it is the first and only museum devoted to Judaism in the Arab world. The building, which originated in 1948 as a Jewish orphanage that housed up to 160 Jewish youth, underwent renovation in 2013.

Later on, an hour’s drive along the motorway leads to Rabat, where accommodation for the night is arranged in a beautiful riad.

    3rd day: Rabat – Fes

After breakfast at the riad, the day starts with a visit to the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, built in honour of the late king who passed away in 1961. His son, Hassan II, who died in 1999, is also entombed here. The mausoleum features stunning tilework, with each piece meticulously hand-cut and placed, while the guards’ uniforms enhance the grandeur.

Next, the Jewish Mellah of Rabat is explored, with its narrow alleyways now home to only a few remaining Jewish families. From here, a visit to the Necropolis of Chellah provides insights into its connections to Jewish history.

After lunch, the journey continues to Meknes for a brief Jewish Heritage Tour of this Imperial City. The Jewish Quarter, with its narrow streets and vibrant courtyards, showcases Jewish history evident in the Hebraic epitaphs from the Christian era, alongside Greek inscriptions found at the Meknes Zaouia, where the tomb of Rabbi David Benmidan resides.

The day concludes with an overnight stay in a beautiful riad.

4th day: Fes Sightseeing, Fes Guided Jewish Heritage Tour

Fes, one of Morocco’s Imperial Cities, holds a rich medieval Jewish history and was once home to the renowned Talmudic scholar, Rabbi Isaac Alfasi. Jewish travellers can immerse themselves in this unique heritage through visits to synagogues, medieval universities, cemeteries, the Mellah (Jewish quarter), and historic gardens and palaces, each reflecting Fes’s lasting cultural importance.

You can visit the following monuments and sites of interest, according to your preference:

Mellah Quarter :Over 650 years old, this Jewish quarter stands as a testament to the city’s Jewish heritage. Once home to more than 40 synagogues, the Mellah, located adjacent to the Royal Palace, showcases the deep historical ties between Jewish life and Moroccan history.

Ibn Danan Synagogue : One of Morocco’s oldest and best-preserved synagogues, Ibn Danan offers a unique glimpse into the once-thriving Jewish community of Fes. Its architecture and design reflect the vibrant religious history of the city.

Jewish Cemetery : Situated near the Mellah, this cemetery is the final resting place of many Jewish saints, including the revered Saint Solica. It remains a profoundly meaningful site, preserving centuries of Jewish presence and tradition.

Fes Medina : The UNESCO-listed Medina is a labyrinth of medieval streets, bustling souks, and historical landmarks. Visitors can explore its ancient mosques, lively markets, and the city’s role as a cultural crossroads.

Leather Tanneries: Famous for its age-old leather production, Fes offers the chance to observe traditional tanning methods still in practice today, showcasing the city’s long-standing craftsmanship.

Local Markets : Fes’s markets are filled with a rich variety of goods, including spices, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, and leather products, reflecting the cultural diversity of Morocco.

Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts : Housed in a beautifully restored caravanserai, this museum celebrates the intricate wooden craftsmanship that has been a hallmark of Fes for generations.

The day concludes with your guide escorting you back to your riad.

5th day: Fes Guided Excursion to Jewish Seffrou – Merzouga

After breakfast at your riad, the journey to the Sahara Desert begins, passing through Seffrou, a historic Jewish town. On the way, Ifrane, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its European architecture, cedar forests, and winter snowfall, is encountered. In Ifrane, synagogues and cemeteries, which have served as sites of Jewish pilgrimage for centuries, are visited.

A stop is made at Bhalil cemetery before exploring Seffrou’s Mellah, where Jews once comprised a significant part of the population. The white-walled medina still reflects Jewish influence, with its distinct wooden balconies. Seffrou stands as a symbol of harmonious Muslim-Jewish coexistence, showcasing Morocco’s interfaith heritage.

Near Azrou, Barbary apes can be seen in the oak and cedar forests of the Middle Atlas. From here, the drive continues south over the Middle Atlas Mountains to Midelt, at 1508 metres, often referred to as “the apple capital” of Morocco. It lies at the foot of Ayachi Mountain and serves as a stop for lunch.

Continuing south, the route takes the Tizi-n-Talghemt pass, known as the “she-camel” pass. The descent through the Ziz Valley reveals its famous palm trees and the length of its oasis. Numerous “Ksars,” small villages of individual houses often surrounded by intact walls, line the road.

Next, the mining town of Er Rachidia is reached, followed by Erfoud, renowned for its date festival and fossils. It is fascinating to observe how these millions of fossils have been transformed into artefacts, making the shops worth visiting. There is no obligation to purchase anything.

After that, the journey continues to Rissani and finally to the famous red Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. A camel ride lasting between one to one and a half hours is taken, either setting out from the camp or heading to it. Alternatively, there is the option of taking a 4×4 to the luxury desert camp.

Back at the camp, dinner is served, followed by an evening of music and an overnight stay in a private, comfortable tent, equipped in style.

    6th day: Merzouga – Ouarzazate

If you rise early, witnessing the breathtaking sunrise is possible as the colours of the dunes shift and the shadows create a stunning display. After breakfast at the camp, the journey towards Tinghir begins. En route, the “khettarat” water channels are passed, with an opportunity to descend and admire the ingenious architecture of this irrigation system, designed to prevent evaporation in the summer heat.

The journey continues to the Dades Valley, with a stop to explore the Dades Gorges and enjoy a short walk after lunch. In the Valley of the Roses, renowned for its Damascene Rose Festival in May, cooperatives in Kelaat Mgouna produce fragrant organic cosmetics.

Next, in Skoura’s oasis, Kasbah Amredhil is visited, which is a beautifully restored example of multi-generational Berber living. Made entirely from adobe, the kasbah offers a glimpse into traditional life, with its thick walls providing warmth in winter and coolness in summer. Following this insightful visit, arrival in Ouarzazate is expected, where a guest house stay is planned for the night.

    7th day: Ouarzazate – Taroudant

After breakfast, a short 30-minute drive leads to Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest, most famous kasbah in Morocco. A local guide provides insights during the visit, sharing the rich and fascinating history of this iconic site.

The journey continues west to Taznakht, renowned for its Berber rugs, where there is an opportunity to observe the ancient art of Berber rug and carpet making. This stop also includes lunch. As the journey progresses, the scenic Tizi-n-Ikhsane and Tizi-n-Tighatine passes are crossed before arriving in Taliouine, the heart of Morocco’s saffron cultivation. Here, a visit to a small government-run museum dedicated to saffron horticulture is possible.

The day concludes in Taroudant, where dinner and an overnight stay in a charming, authentic riad are planned.

    8th day: Taroudant – Essaouira

In the morning, there is an opportunity to explore Taroudant, often referred to as “the little Marrakech” due to its impressive ramparts and bustling local markets. Known for its craftsmanship, the town is famous for jewellery and Berber rugs. Unlike Marrakech, Taroudant’s ancient walls remain fully intact.

The town’s Jewish community has played a significant role in its history, and a visit to the Jewish Mellah and cemetery reveals the burial site of the revered Saint David Ben Baruk Cohen Azog. A highlight of the visit is the rare chance to see one of the only adobe synagogues in the world, located in Azran. This 700-year-old synagogue features Hebrew prayers painted on its walls and an ark with Berber inscriptions.

Afterwards, the journey through the Souss River Valley continues, passing thousands of argan trees, as well as banana and orange plantations. Following lunch in Agadir, the journey progresses north along the coast through Taghazout, a renowned surfer’s paradise, offering stunning views of the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.

Upon arrival in Essaouira, your driver will escort you to your riad, providing time to settle in and relax. In the evening, the charming atmosphere of one of the cosy cafés in the town centre can be enjoyed.

9th day: Essaouira Jewish Heritage Sightseeing

Essaouira is a coastal town known for its Portuguese and Jewish heritage, as well as its iconic blue boats, whitewashed houses, fresh seafood, and the renowned Gnawa music festival.

After breakfast at your riad, there is an opportunity to explore the medina’s vibrant, windy alleyways and photograph its impressive fortifications. Local shops offering leather and metal goods can be visited, allowing for the chance to capture artisans at work. Later, the lively seaport can be explored to see the famous blue boats and select freshly caught fish for a delicious lunch prepared on the spot.

In the afternoon, a guided Jewish heritage tour of Essaouira is available. The Jewish quarter, established in the 18th century, once housed up to 40% of the town’s population and had over 25 synagogues, though only a few remain today. The recently restored Simon Attias Synagogue can be discovered, which also includes a Jewish museum and a cultural centre named after historian Haim Zafrani, dedicated to preserving Moroccan Jewish heritage and celebrating Essaouira’s identity.

The Jewish cemeteries can be visited, where notable figures such as Rabbi Haim Pinto, whose mausoleum is the focus of an annual hilloula, are buried. The second cemetery, opened in the 18th century to accommodate the growing Jewish population, serves as the resting place for many rabbis, intellectuals, musicians, and other prominent members of the Jewish community.

An overnight stay is arranged in a charming riad in the heart of Essaouira.

10th day: Essaouira – Marrakech – Free Half a day in Marrakech

After breakfast, the Jewish Morocco tour continues with a drive to Marrakech. Along the way, numerous Berber villages can be seen, and there may be a stop at an argan cooperative, where higher-quality argan products than those available outside Morocco can be found. This presents a good opportunity to purchase argan oil products if desired. There is also the possibility of witnessing the rare sight of goats climbing the argan trees to munch on the leaves and argan nuts.

Upon arriving in Marrakech, the afternoon offers time to explore the old medina and wander through the vibrant, colourful souks. Alternatively, relaxing with a traditional glass of Moroccan mint tea on a rooftop terrace overlooking Djemaa El Fna is an option. Dinner is arranged at one of Marrakech’s beautiful kosher restaurants.

11th day: Marrakech Sightseeing Tour – Jewish Tour Guide in Morocco, Marrakech

Marrakech, one of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities, is also one of the world’s most renowned and popular travel destinations. On this Jewish Heritage tour of Marrakech, you will explore the Jewish Mellah, visit the Lazama Synagogue, and discover some of the city’s most fascinating sights.

Depending on your time and preferences, the following attractions can be included:

Jewish Mellah: You can begin your tour in the Jewish Mellah, founded in 1558. Although the Jewish community once enjoyed autonomy, they were restricted from owning property outside the Mellah. Today, only around 250 Jews remain in Marrakech. The recently restored Mellah is well worth exploring, with its bustling souks and historic streets. You may also visit

Bet-El Synagogue, one of the key gathering places for Marrakech’s Jewish community.

El Bahia Palace: Built between 1894 and 1900 for Grand Vizier Ahmed Ibn Moussa, this grand palace features 160 rooms arranged around beautifully designed courtyards. Marvel at the intricate stucco panels, zellij tilework, marble floors, carved cedar ceilings, and elegant finishes, all set within lush gardens covering eight hectares.

Ben Youssef Medersa: Originally founded in 1331 and later rebuilt by the Saadians in the 1560s, this former Quranic school once housed 800 students. Its stunning architecture showcases detailed zellij tiling, intricate stucco plasterwork, and elaborately carved cedar wood.

The Majorelle Gardens: Designed by French artist Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent, these peaceful gardens feature exotic plants, serene ponds, and the famous “Majorelle blue” decor. The gardens also host a small Berber museum, a café, and a restaurant offering Moroccan-inspired cuisine.

    12th day: Airport Transfer

Your driver will transfer you to the airport to catch your flight on time, marking the end of your Morocco Jewish tour. This day will be planned depending on the flight’s timing and bringing your wonderful Jewish tours or Morocco adventure to a close.

    Day 1 : Casablanca

Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Morocco. Your adventure begins today with a welcome meeting at 6 pm in the famed city of Casablanca. If you’d like to explore the city and all it has to offer, it’s recommended that you arrive a day or two early. Modelled after Marseille in France, this city is famous for its art deco buildings and the modern Hassan II Mosque. If you have time, wander the old medina and the city walls, then jump in a taxi to visit the Quartiers des Habous – the new medina. Finish the day with a walk along the Corniche, watching the locals play football on the beach or taking it easy at one of the many great cafes.

    Special information

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Please be aware that some of our travellers in Casablanca are being approached by locals offering excursions before their Intrepid trip commences. This has been particularly prevalent in and around the hotels used by Intrepid. These guides are in no way connected to Intrepid Travel, and we cannot guarantee the safety or quality standards of their tours. We strongly advise customers against joining any tour offered by unauthorised guides.

Day 2 : Tangier To Chefchouen

This morning, take the TGV fast train to the coastal town of Tangier – a place of strategic importance to the Mediterranean as a gateway to Africa. Head out on a short orientation walk with your leader, then enjoy some free time exploring the town. Maybe duck into Café Hafa, which has hosted celebrities in the past like Sean Connery, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Why not enjoy the epic view overlooking the Gibraltar while you partake in the national brew of Morocco – a steaming cup of mint tea? In the afternoon, take a private transfer to the beautiful Chefchaouen. Set against a wide valley and nestled between two peaks in the stunning Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista – so you might just feel like you’re in the hills of Spain. Follow your leader on an orientation walk and head to a great sunset viewpoint overlooking the town. In the evening, if you’re feeling peckish, the local goat’s cheese is a popular treat.

    Day 3 : Chefchouen

Today is a free day in Chefchaouen. Maybe take a guided tour of the sights, sounds and smells of the medina, or sample the delicious local specialties (the orange juice is delicious!) at a cafe in the Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Alternatively, you might prefer to get out of town and enjoy a hike and picnic in the surrounding hills. The hiking tour outside of the city is a popular option, as you can leave the shades of blue for a journey across the Rif Mountains and join your guide to Akchour Falls – a gorgeous natural wonder, abundant with lush mountains, rivers and waterfalls. In the evening, how about tucking into a tagine at a local restaurant or visiting a hammam – a traditional Moroccan spa? The night is yours to enjoy.

    Day 4 : Fes

This morning, take a private transfer and travel through rolling hills and olive groves to the archaeological site of Volubilis. This was once a provincial Roman capital, and the remains make an undeniably impressive sight. Take a tour around the ruins with a local guide, which look spectacular in the sunlight. Don’t forget to take your camera today, as the town is filled with fantastic mosaics along the Decumanus Maximus, many of which remain fully intact. Drive onwards to Fes, where you’ll spend the next two nights. Fes is the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco – vibrant, noisy and fascinating – it really is a feast for the senses. The evening is then free for you to spend how you’d like.

    Special information

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours. Remember to pack drinking water, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream for your tour of Volubilis, as it may get very hot and you will be exposed to the sun.

Day 5 : Day Tour In Fes

Take a guided group walking tour of the Old City this morning, known locally as Fes el Bali. Step back into the Middle Ages in the labyrinth of the medina, which is alive with craftsmen, markets, tanneries and mosques. Pass donkeys piled high with goods (this is one of the largest car-free urban zones in the world) and explore the specialty sections that divide the souk. Look out for the Medersa Bou Inania – one of the city’s most beautiful buildings, recently restored and now open to tourists. Visit Medresse el Attarine and the splendid Funduk Nejjarine – a beautifully restored 18th-century inn. You’ll also see the famous tannery, known for the iconic view overlooking its dye pits, and a ceramics factory where you can see potters working traditionally. In the evening, why not join your group and try some Moroccan specialities like harira (chickpea soup) and chicken-stuffed pastillas with couscous?

    Special information

There will be 5 to 6 hours of walking today, but this is an integral part of experiencing Fes to the fullest.

Today’s experience is also filled with shopping experiences at a few carefully selected places. If shopping is not your thing, don’t worry! Discuss other options with your tour leader beforehand and they’ll accommodate you. You may have some free time to explore at your own pace, but keep in mind that your leader won’t be able to set a meeting point inside the medina as it can be quite challenging to navigate the old alleyways. If you decide to explore on your own, you can easily catch up with the group at the hotel.

Day 6 : Merzouga Sahara Desert

Today, you’ll travel towards the mighty Sahara. It is a long drive, but there will be many opportunities to stop and admire views of local kasbahs and palmeries (valleys lush with date palms, fields and orchards). You may also have the chance to pass by nomads along their journey – these free-spirited people are born to move with their animal flocks under the open sky and they never stay settled in one place for long. Continue through barren mountainsides and fertile valleys, pausing in frontier towns like Erfoud and Rissani before reaching the end of the road at the small Saharan settlement of Merzouga. With a backdrop of the orange-coloured Erg Chebbi sand dunes, the charming Saharan village of Merzouga feels wonderfully isolated, like the modern world has left it behind. Store your main baggage in your overnight camp on the edge of the desert and mount a camel to watch the breathtaking sunset from a unique perspective, among the rolling dunes of the expansive desert. Spend the night in a desert camp under the North African stars and enjoy a homecooked feast by the fire.

    Special information

Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.

The camp is simple, with bedding and basic toilet facilities. The blankets are warm enough for most travellers between April and October, but you may like to bring your own sleeping sheet and an extra jumper from November to March if you prefer. Electricity is not available in the camp, so it’s important to come prepared with phones, cameras and everything else you may need fully charged.

The camel ride is a highlight for most in Morocco, but if you’d prefer not to, it’s possible to walk alongside the caravan on the sand instead. The walk takes about an hour and is not very demanding, so you will manage with just a basic level of fitness.

    Day 7 : Todra Gorges

Walk up the nearest dune for a spectacular sunrise over the Sahara, break your fast with traditional food, and begin the drive to Todra Gorge. On the way visit the oasis museum of El Khorbat, before continuing on to the beautiful Todra Valley, dotted with mud-brick villages perched on hillsides. The remarkable scenery – sprawling green valleys and rocks sculpted into stunning formations by the wind – will be your home for the next two nights. This area is best discovered on foot, so you’ll take a short walk through the surrounding farmland.

Day 8 : Spending The Day At Todra Gorges

Today, enjoy free time to explore the Todra Valley. A guided hike through the gorge and over a nearby mountain pass is highly recommended. There are a couple of circuits to choose from, but the most popular choice is a 10 km circuit that will take around 4 hours. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll walk a trail that isn’t too challenging if you have a moderate fitness level. Pass Amazigh villages, meeting locals along the way. The surrounding mountains and the famous Rose Valley in the distance make a sensational setting for a day of discovery on foot. For lunch, you can join some local ladies in their mudbrick kasbah – a fantastic opportunity to see how people live in this largely unchanged culture. If you’d rather relax, then you can simply lounge by the hotel pool and enjoy the views over the lush palmeries and soaring cliff faces.

    Special information

The optional walk around Todra Gorge takes place over rocky terrain and the first part is more challenging as it winds over a steady incline. Going back down may be slippery, especially after a rainy day. Please be prepared with good walking shoes or boots and ensure you have a moderate fitness level.

Day 9 : Ouarzazat To Ait Ben Haddou

Today, travel south to Ait Benhaddou. The scenic drive takes you past ancient kasbah ruins, former colonial military outposts, austere mountains and valleys of palm trees. Stop for lunch in Ouarzazate, where movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Sheltering Sky and Black Hawk Down were filmed. If there’s time, you might like to take a tour of the Atlas Movie Studios. Arrive at Ait Benhaddou – once an important stop for caravans carrying salt across the Sahara. Visit the grand kasbah with your trip leader – an impressive example of clay architecture that has been listed as a World Heritage site. In the late afternoon, enjoy Morocco’s most famous cuisine with your group – couscous and tagine cooked by your host at the guesthouse where you’ll spend the night.

    Day 10 : Aroumd

This morning, journey over the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2260 metres above sea level) to Toubkal National Park, home to the highest mountain in North Africa. Pass snow-capped mountains and valleys in full flower along the way. At the end of the road, you’ll reach the rural village of Imlil, where you can store your main luggage and load a daypack onto a pack mule. Immerse yourself in traditional mountain village life with a short trek up to the peaceful village of Aroumd. Far from the reach of the modern world and sitting on a rocky outcrop, this town is a gorgeous place for an I’m-so-far-from-home moment. With stunning views across the High Atlas Mountains, you’ll have a unique opportunity to experience traditional Amazigh culture and spend the night in a family-run mountain home (or gite) at the foot of Mount Toubkal. Surrounded by the smell of woodstoves and bread, meet the host family and enjoy some traditional Amazigh hospitality and mouth-watering home-cooked food.

    Special information

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

If you feel uncomfortable with the walk through the villages, you can opt to ride a mule instead or a car may be organized at an extra cost if you let your tour leader know in advance. You may choose to bring sturdy boots if you prefer but a pair of good walking shoes with rigid and grippy soles will be sufficient.

Facilities at the homestay are shared (both the bathroom and sleeping arrangements) but cosy, comfortable and definitely a better way to immerse yourself in the culture than a hotel.

    Day 11 : Essaouira

Wake up early this morning for a refreshing hike through Imlil’s outlying villages – to Sid Chamharouch. Explore rural Amazigh villages, twisting mule tracks and breathtaking mountain landscapes. Stop for breaks among imposing cliff faces and eventually reach Sidi Chamharouch – a pilgrimage site with a waterfall, a stream and a few simple houses. Enjoy a slow-cooked tagine made by a local for lunch, while enjoying incredible views of the Atlas Mountains. Take the opportunity to rest for a while and swap stories with the locals, before hiking back to Aroumd. Later, head towards the Atlantic Coast to the old fishing town of Essaouira. Sandstone walkways contrast whitewashed houses, bright blue sky and the surrounding beaches and dunes. This artists’ town was once home to sizeable British and Jewish populations, and its charm has seduced people like Orson Welles and Jimi Hendrix, who (according to local legend) spent much of his time here in the 1960s. Your tour leader will guide you through some options for the rest of the day – the seafood auctions are always a fun thing to see. Maybe you’d like to visit one of the small local cafes and do a spot of people-watching. Tonight, you’re free to indulge in a fresh seafood dinner or stroll by the beach in the evening light.

Day 12 : Guided Tour In Essaouira

Today, join a local guide for a walking tour through the old medina, Jewish mellah, port and Skala (sea wall). Essaouira is one of the oldest port cities in the country, and fishing here is still quite traditional. You’ll have the chance to meet one of the expert fishermen in the port, who will tell the group all about their story and show you some of the tricks they use, what type of fish to catch and what seasons mean to them. After, enjoy some free time. These narrow streets, mostly free of cars, feel like the days of sea pirates are not too distant. Browse the little shops and art galleries that dot the town and discover the gorgeous scent of the burled Thuya wood – delicately formed and inlaid here, gaining a reputation as one of Essaouira’s specialities. The scent of the oils that are used to polish the coloured wood permeates the air, making walking through these streets incredibly pleasant. Why not order a freshly cooked plate of the day’s freshest catch for lunch? Later, maybe indulge in a hammam (Moroccan bathhouse and spa) or relax at your accommodation.

Day 13 : Drive To Marrakech

This morning after breakfast, take a shared local bus to Marrakech – the ancient, exotic city wrapped in European modernity. Embark on a walking tour with your trip leader through the bustling medina to meet local shop owners and craftsmen and learn the secrets of navigating through the zigzagging lanes. Stop to try different snacks and local favourites, like Moroccan doughnuts and mint tea, traditional bread, olives, nuts, dates and orange juice, and harira (chickpea soup). Be enticed by the alluring scents and brilliant colours of the spice markets, the sounds of the musicians, the rich folds of carpets, and the beautifully perfumed gardens. Tonight, maybe join the pulsing crowds for dinner at the famous Djemaa el-Fna Square – one of the largest public spaces in the world and unique to Marrakech. When night falls on this square, it transforms into a hive of activity. Henna painters, performers and storytellers share the square with a street food bazaar packed with stalls loaded with Moroccan delicacies. For dinner tonight, you might like to try the local snail soup and finish your evening with a cup of tea in a rooftop restaurant overlooking the square.

    Day 14 : Marrakech

It’s time to explore Marrakech at your own pace, today. In the seemingly endless mosaic of souqs, each is devoted to a separate trade – pottery, woodwork, copper, leather, carpets or spices. Watch skilled artisans perfect their craft, practice your haggling skills or take a break from the hustle to share a tagine with your new friends. Maybe visit Koutoubia Mosque and its 12th-century minaret, which was the famous prototype for the Giralda tower in Seville. Wander through the tropical gardens of the French painter Jacques Majorelle (now owned by Yves Saint Laurent) or check out the Palais Bahia, a superb example of Muslim architecture. This evening, you’ll likely be drawn back to the Djemaa el-Fna and its surrounding medina for dinner at one of the many outdoor restaurants lining the square – a perfect spot for a farewell dinner.

Day 15 : Free Time In Marrakech

With no activities planned for today, you’re free to leave at any time. If you’d like to spend more time in Marrakech, just speak to your booking agent.

Itinerary of 4-days Kasbahs, Gorges, Merzouga desert tour from Marrakech

1st day: Marrakech – Dades gorges

Kick off your Merzouga Desert tour from Marrakech by morning departure at 8.30 from your riad. Cross the High Atlas Mountains, including the famous Tizi-n-Tichka pass, the highest pass in North Africa at 2260 metres. From these mountains, there are wide views over the green valleys and burbling streams. The little Berber villages perched on the mountainsides, sometimes barely distinguishable from the mountains themselves, are spectacular and breathtaking.

You steadily descend from the pass reach Ouarzazate. The town is sometimes called ‘the gateway to the desert’ and is technically part of the massive Sahara. Here you stop for lunch.

Later the road continues to the Skoura Oasis, where numerous ancient kasbahs, some sadly in ruins, stand amongst the palm trees. Kasbah Amredhil has been beautifully restored and is well worth visiting. It is constructed entirely of adobe, an excellent building material.  It is both warm in winter and cool in summer, due to the thickness of the walls.

From here, the route takes us through Kela’a M’gouna, the Valley of Roses, with a stop to see cosmetic articles, well-known and much valued throughout Morocco. They are locally-made from the valley’s abundant Damascene roses. You stop in the Dades Valley for the night.

2nd day: Dades gorges – Merzouga

After breakfast, there is time to visit the Dades Gorges, which lay at the bottom of the sea millions of years ago. Great quantities of sediment were deposited around giant coral reefs, and over time this material became compacted into a variety of sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and limestone. Eventually, the movement of the earth’s crust caused the region to rise above the sea. This formed the Atlas Mountains and surrounding landscape for miles. You can walk by the river, before continuing to Toudgha to the very different gorges there.

Turning off the road at Tinjdad , you drive there via the Ziz Valley, famous for its succulent dates.  En route, you will notice strange piles of sand following the road.  These are the heads of the “khettarat”, the ingenious underground water channels designed to minimise evaporation in the desert heat.  It is fascinating to climb down to experience the coolness below ground and to wonder at the ancient engineering involved.

You continue to Erfoud, famous for fossil finds. Many them have been cut and polished into attractive and useful artefacts.  In the afternoon you can take a camel ride in the Sahara. The sunset from the top of the dunes is spectacular (250m).

You have dinner and spend the night at a luxury desert camp with private bathroom, king-sized beds, beautiful Moroccan furnishings and lamps tastefully arranged to enhance your enjoyment of the silence and beauty of the dunes.

    3rd day: Merzouga – Ouarzazate

If you wake up early enough, you can watch the spectacle of the sunrise, when the colour of the dunes and the play of shadows are an awesome sight. The itinerary continues along a more southerly road following the mountains towards the Dra’a Valley passing the village of Tazzarine (featured in the film ‘Babel’), and on to N’Qob for lunch.

In the afternoon, we drive along the Dra’a Valley towards Agdez, passing more oases and traditional adobe Kasbahs beside the river. The oldest kasbah, Kasbah Tamnougalte, in the Dra’a Valley is situated near Agdez, and you will have some time to visit it. Some parts lie in ruins, particularly the Jewish area, while some parts are still fully occupied.

The last part of the day’s journey is across the Tizi-n-Tinfifite pass to Ouarzazate, where you will spend the night.

    4th day: Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After breakfast, you will visit Kasbah Taourirt in the town, which belonged to the Glaoui family, the Pashas of Marrakech. Driving north, you leave the main road and take a side road to Ait ben Haddou, which also belonged to the Lords of the Atlas, the same Glaoui family. This is the most famous Kasbah in Morocco and one of Morocco’s nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is perhaps better known as the backdrop to many Hollywood blockbusters.

From here, you drive along the beautiful and awe-inspiring Ounila Valley. The road is full of bends, surprises at the hues of the rock and soil, Berber villages and gardens, as well as smaller Kasbahs. Finally you reach Telouet, the main seat of the Glaoui family. Each addition to the building now stands in ruins exposed to the wind and the rain. Wait to be pleasantly surprised by the traditional interior decoration as you reach the farthest end of the Kasbah.

Unfortunately, the whole Kasbah is now closed due to the damage caused by the earthquake that struck Morocco in September 2023. Nevertheless, it is still worth visiting the exterior with a local guide to discover its rich history.

Once back on the main road, we reach Marrakech at the end of the afternoon. Your 4-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech comes to an end as your driver transfers you to your riad.

    Day 1 : Ouarzazate – Dades Gorges

After breakfast, you set out for your 4-day desert tour from Ouarzazate to Merzouga as your driver picks you up at 08:30 from your riad. You follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to Skoura Oasis.

Here, you will stop to visit Kasbah Amridhil, which used to be featured in the old 50 dirham banknote. The kasbah has been beautifully restored and is well worth visiting; constructed entirely of adobe, an excellent building material that keeps room temperature cool in the summer and warm in the winter due to the thickness of the walls.

Having arrived in the Dades Valley, you will have time to walk in the valley, stroll by the fields and gardens and explore life in the oases. You will spend the night with dinner and breakfast in a beautiful guest house overlooking the valley.

    Day 2 : Dades Gorges – Merzouga

After breakfast, you continue your adventure southeast. In Toudgha Gorges, there are plenty of opportunities to walk alongside the river through the gardens or alongside the riverbank on the other side of the gorges.

Next, you continue your desert trip alongside the Ziz Valley, which is very remarkable for its huge palm groves and fortified kasbahs standing tall among the palm trees. Between Tinjdad and Erfoud, you can stop to go down into “Khettara,” a fascinating underground water channel system deep below the earth, always cool and preventing the evaporation of water.

In Erfoud itself, you can stop at a local workshop to see the workings of thousands of fossils made into all sorts of artefacts. From here, we continue driving east as far as Merzouga, where sand alongside the road indicates the start of the mighty Sahara Desert.

At the campsite, you check-in to your tent and enjoy a relaxing glass of tea and Moroccan biscuits. Then, you take a camel ride up to the summit of the Erg Chebbi dunes (250 m) where you can admire the sunset from the top of the dunes!

Back at the camp, dinner is served, followed by an evening of nomad music and drumming around a campfire. You spend the night in your private tent, equipped with a private toilet & shower, king-sized beds, mattresses, sheets, pillows, blankets & carpets, lamps and beautiful Moroccan furnishings, all tastefully arranged to enhance your stay.

    Day 3 : Merzouga – Zagora

If you wake up early enough, you can watch the spectacle of the sunrise, when the colour of the dunes and the play of shadows are an incredible sight. You will also have free time to wander the dunes and experience the tranquility of this magical place.

After breakfast, you travel south as far as Zagora, the largest oasis in the Dra’a Valley and the gate to the mighty Sahara Desert. The journey takes you along the length of the Saghro Mountains and via the villages of Rissani, Alnif, Tazarine (featured in the film ‘Babel’), and then N’Qob just in time for lunch.

From here, you travel along the ancient caravan route and via stunning Berber villages. You arrive in Zagora by the end of the afternoon. You spend the night with dinner and breakfast in a beautiful guest house.

    Day 4 : Zagora – Ouarzazate

After breakfast, you will visit the local pottery co-operatives in Tamgroute village, which produce all the green glaze pottery products you may have seen all over the south.

It is interesting to visit these workshops to learn how local clay is worked into products in a manner unique to this region. Then, you can also see an ancient Quranic Library with a fascinating display of exquisite hand-written Arabic texts.

From here, you travel back up north to Ouarzazate. As you descend the Tizi-n-Tinfifite pass (1660m), you will be amazed by the splendid views of the extensive green oases and the innumerable palm trees, all indicating the beginning of the Dra’a Valley.

We drive off-road through the Dra’a Valley, which offers better views of the green oases and unlimited palm trees, with ancient Kasbahs idyllically standing among the palm trees and by both sides of the river. Then, there is time to visit Kasbah Tamnougalt, the oldest and the largest kasbah in the Dra’a Valley.

Back on the paved road, we cross Agdz, a oasis town well-known for the variety of its palm dates, and arrive in Ouarzazate by the end of the afternoon. Your driver will transfer you to your riad which marks the end of your 4-day Merzouga desert tour from Ouarzazate.
